Deep within the captivating rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His life was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was mainly to look after his flock of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the rustling of the breezes across the single tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day after day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

However, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived here a naughty scheme.

Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One day he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but found no wolf.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
